German Foreign Minister Reaffirms Transatlantic Ties Ahead of High-Stakes Washington Visit

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul on Sunday underscored the vital importance of transatlantic relations as he departed for a pivotal diplomatic trip to

Washington amid rising tensions over U.S. interests in Greenland and recent actions in Venezuela. [1]

Addressing reporters in Berlin before boarding his flight, Wadephul said Berlin views the partnership with the United States as essential to shaping the global order. “Never before has it been so crucial to invest in the transatlantic partnership in order to remain capable of shaping the world order,” he said, highlighting the stakes for Western alliances. The visit, set against a backdrop of diplomatic friction, comes as Washington’s strategic focus on Greenland and its controversial military operation in Venezuela have put strains on relations with several European allies. [3]

Wadephul said he plans to confront what he described as “differences of opinion” with U.S. counterparts and reaffirm Germany’s commitment to shared responsibilities for peace and security. During talks Monday with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the foreign minister said he intends to address these issues through frank but constructive dialogue. [2]

Before reaching Washington, Wadephul will make a scheduled stop in Iceland on Sunday to meet his Icelandic counterpart and discuss Arctic security — a topic gaining urgency amid disputes over Greenland’s status and the wider geopolitical race for influence in the Arctic.

Later on Monday, the German minister is also set to meet U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres, underlining Berlin’s emphasis on international law and cooperation as pillars of its foreign policy. “For Germany, reliability as an international partner clearly includes a commitment to international law and international cooperation,” he said. The Washington trip marks a significant moment in bilateral diplomacy, as both allies seek to navigate disagreements while maintaining the strength of a decades-long partnership.
