Democrats are raising alarm after reports surfaced that the Pentagon is halting nearly completed software projects worth more than \$800 million — money that has already been spent.
According to Reuters, both the Navy and Air Force were preparing to scrap these projects and instead push for new contracts with companies like Salesforce and Palantir. That decision has drawn sharp criticism from lawmakers who see it as wasteful and possibly politically motivated.
Senator Tim Kaine didn’t mince words, calling the move suspicious. “The Pentagon has yet to show that it had a good reason for halting these contracts in the last inning and scrapping work American tax dollars have already paid for,” Kaine said. He added that the timing — coming just days after Palantir’s CEO spoke at a major GOP donor retreat hosted by House Speaker Mike Johnson — “reeks of corruption.”
Other Democrats echoed the concern. Representative Maggie Goodlander, a Navy Reserve intelligence officer who serves on the House Armed Services Committee, said canceling nearly finished projects only to redirect the work “is an insult to taxpayers and servicemembers across America.”
Representative Salud Carbajal pointed to what he described as a pattern of wasteful spending under Trump, from costly military parades to unnecessary troop deployments. Jill Tokuda, another Democrat on the Armed Services Committee, warned that removing oversight safeguards was “downright reckless” — especially when the Pentagon was finally on the verge of rolling out pay systems that could actually pass an audit.
The Pentagon has not offered a detailed explanation for the decision, and requests for comment from the Air Force and Navy were declined. Trump officials, however, have argued that the broader goal is to streamline military contracting and cut red tape.
But critics say the pause does the opposite — scrapping years of taxpayer-funded work in favor of politically connected companies. For Democrats, it’s another example of how Trump’s pledge to root out waste in Washington has been undermined by his own administration’s actions. Photo by David B.
