Trump Defends Texas Redistricting Effort Amid Democratic Opposition

U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday defended his support for a Republican-led initiative to redraw Texas' congressional districts ahead of the 2026 midterm elections, amid a heated

political standoff.

Speaking in an interview with CNBC, Trump praised Texas leadership and emphasized his electoral success in the state. “We have a terrific governor and strong leadership in Texas. I won Texas with record numbers — the highest vote count in the state's history,” Trump said. “That should translate to five additional congressional seats. It’s only fair.”

The redistricting battle has intensified as Democratic lawmakers in Texas have left the state in protest, attempting to block the GOP-backed redrawing plan.

When pressed about his future political ambitions, Trump gave a mixed response. “Probably not,” he said when asked if he intends to run for president again. However, he later added, “I’d like to run.” The U.S. Constitution's 22nd Amendment limits presidents to two terms, whether served consecutively or not. Photo by LoneStarMike, Wikimedia commons.
