Tiger Woods, one of the most celebrated figures in golf history, was arrested Friday in Florida on suspicion of driving under the influence following a single-vehicle crash near his home on
Jupiter Island.
According to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, Woods was driving a Land Rover along a two-lane road when the incident occurred. Authorities said he had been attempting to overtake a work truck towing a trailer at high speed when his vehicle clipped the rear of the truck, causing it to roll onto its side.
The 15-time major champion managed to crawl out of the passenger side of the vehicle before officers arrived at the scene. No injuries were reported, either to Woods or the other driver involved.
Woods was taken into custody and later released the same day, in accordance with Florida law requiring a minimum eight-hour hold before bail. A breathalyzer test administered at the Martin County Jail showed no presence of alcohol. However, investigators suspect impairment may have been caused by medication or drugs. Woods declined to take a urine test—an action that carries an additional charge under Florida law.
He now faces misdemeanor charges, including DUI, property damage, and refusal to comply with a lawful test.
Speaking briefly about the incident, former U.S. President Donald Trump described Woods as “an amazing person” and a close friend, expressing concern but offering limited details.
This marks the second DUI-related incident in Woods’ life. In 2017, he was arrested under similar circumstances in Jupiter, Florida, and later pleaded guilty to reckless driving.
The latest episode adds to a long list of challenges the golfer has faced, particularly concerning his health. Woods suffered severe leg injuries in a 2021 car crash and has undergone numerous surgeries over the years, including procedures on his back, knees, and Achilles tendon. These physical setbacks have significantly limited his appearances on the PGA Tour in recent seasons.
Despite these obstacles, Woods recently returned to competitive golf, representing his team in a TGL Finals match earlier in the week. It marked his first competitive outing since missing the cut at the 2024 British Open. His participation in the upcoming Masters Tournament in Augusta remains uncertain.
About Tiger Woods: Career and Legacy
Widely regarded as one of the greatest golfers of all time, Woods has built a legacy that rivals legends like Jack Nicklaus. He has won 15 major championships—second only to Nicklaus’ 18—and shares the record for most PGA Tour victories (82) with Sam Snead.
Among his most remarkable achievements is the “Tiger Slam,” when he held all four major titles simultaneously across the 2000–2001 seasons. His dominance during that era included a historic 15-stroke victory at the 2000 U.S. Open, the largest margin in major championship history.
