Stanford University announced on August 5 that it has laid off more than 360 employees, attributing the job cuts to budget constraints driven by the federal funding policies of President Donald
Trump's administration.
In a statement, a university spokesperson confirmed that “Stanford is in the process of making budget reductions,” adding that “last week, many schools and units made staff workforce reductions. In total, 363 layoffs occurred.”
The layoffs come amid heightened tensions between the Trump administration and higher education institutions. The administration has threatened to withhold federal funds from universities over pro-Palestinian protests related to Israel’s war in Gaza, as well as opposition to climate initiatives, transgender rights policies, and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs.
Stanford previously announced in June a US $140 million reduction in its general funds budget for the upcoming academic year, citing “a challenging fiscal environment shaped in large part by federal policy changes affecting higher education.”
This development follows a similar funding freeze at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where the administration recently blocked over US $330 million in federal support. The freeze was imposed after allegations that UCLA failed to prevent a hostile environment for Jewish and Israeli students amid ongoing campus protests concerning Gaza.
According to the Los Angeles Times, UCLA leaders are preparing to negotiate with federal officials in an attempt to resolve the funding dispute.
The Trump administration has also reached settlements with Columbia University and Brown University over related investigations, with Columbia agreeing to pay more than US\$220 million and Brown US $50 million. Talks with Harvard University are still ongoing.
These actions have drawn criticism from rights advocates, who warn that the government’s measures threaten academic freedom and free speech. Protesters, including Jewish organizations, argue that the administration conflates legitimate criticism of Israel’s military operations and advocacy for Palestinian rights with anti-Semitism and extremism.
