The U.S. Department of Education announced Monday that its Office for Civil Rights has opened an investigation into Duke University and the Duke Law Journal following allegations of
race-based discrimination.
According to the department, the investigation stems from recent reports suggesting that the university may have considered race, color, or national origin when selecting members for its law journal. "This investigation is based on recent reporting alleging that Duke University discriminates on the bases of race, color, and/or national origin by using these factors to select law journal members," the department said in a statement.
Previously, the Trump administration had raised similar concerns. A letter from that administration accused Duke of applying racial preferences in its hiring practices, admissions decisions, and scholarship awards.
